From Civil to Sacrament | Hamilton & Amanda
A few weeks back, I had the joy of photographing a very meaningful moment in the lives of Hamilton and Amanda as they celebrated the convalidation of their marriage at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church.
Hamilton and Amanda were already married civilly three years ago, but they recently made the beautiful decision to elevate their marriage to the sacramental life of the Church. Their convalidation ceremony was a quiet but deeply meaningful celebration surrounded by close family and friends in St. John’s beautiful historic chapel.
What made the day even more special was that Hamilton was journeying through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) and was preparing to enter the Church during the Easter Vigil. However, because he was not fully Catholic at the time of the convalidation, this meant that the couple could not receive Holy Communion together during the Mass. In a way, their convalidation felt like a moment of faithful anticipation. With Easter now passed, and their marriage having now been sacramentally blessed, I’m so thrilled for them to share in the fullness of the Eucharist together as husband and wife within the Church.
There was a profound sense of peace and reverence during the ceremony. The historic sanctuary of St. John the Apostle provided a beautiful setting as Hamilton and Amanda exchanged their vows before God, asking Him to strengthen and sanctify the marriage they had already been living faithfully for the past three years.
After the ceremony, we stepped across the road to the grounds of the newer church building at St. John the Apostle. The wide open space, beautiful stone architecture, and early spring light created a wonderful backdrop for some group photos of the couple with their beloved family and friends who had gathered to witness this important moment in their lives.
One of my favorite parts of the day was seeing the joy on everyone’s faces. Convalidation ceremonies are often small and intimate, but they carry a deep spiritual significance. It was clear how much love and support surrounded Hamilton and Amanda as they began this new chapter of their marriage.
Following the portraits, the celebration continued with a reception at Fogo de Chão. Family and friends gathered around the table to enjoy a wonderful meal together, share stories, and celebrate the couple’s journey of faith.
It was truly an honor to document this day for Hamilton and Amanda. Moments like these are a reminder that the sacrament of marriage is not only about a single day, but about a lifelong commitment to grow together in faith, love, and holiness. Their story is one of patience, trust, and faithful anticipation, and I’m grateful I had the chance to capture it.
